About Shelley & Joyful Pear DesignOver 35 years of creative industry experience
Joyful Pear Design is a boutique creative tuition studio based in sunny Onerahi, Whangārei. For over 15 years, I have offered private, one-on-one mentoring to small business owners and individuals looking to master websites, eBooks, and digital confidence—entirely at your pace, in plain English, and with no rush.
I believe that the best learning happens when you feel completely relaxed, curious, and supported. That is why we skip the high-pressure environments, rigid curriculums, and confusing tech jargon, focusing entirely on what is genuinely useful to your specific goals.

My Creative Journey
I am a graphic designer by trade, with over three decades of experience in the publishing, corporate design, and marketing industries.
The Beginnings:
My career started in Auckland, where I spent years working on commercial magazines, books, and marketing campaigns.
Adult Education:
In the 1990s, I began teaching adults and fell in love with adult education and the sheer joy of seeing complex things suddenly click for someone.
The Educator:
Passionate about sharing knowledge using techniques that help everyone enjoy learning, I helped establish and run a tertiary graphic design school in Auckland city, teaching advanced design concepts.

A New Perspective on Teaching
Recently, my own journey navigating the health system gave me a profound new perspective on my work. It deeply clarified what truly matters to me as an educator. I realized that my greatest asset isn't just my decades of technical design skills — it's my passion for creating an emotionally safe learning space.
All learning, including learning new technology or opening up creatively, can bring up a lot of anxiety and frustration. My lived experience allows me to meet you exactly where you are with total understanding. Whether we are setting up a professional business website, formatting an eBook, or exploring stress relief through therapeutic art, I am here to hold a calm, encouraging space to help you grow in the directions you want to choose.
When I'm not teaching, I am a lifelong learner myself — constantly attending courses, exploring new creative tools, and gathering fresh ideas for my next project.
“Learning is a treasure that will follow its owner everywhere.” ― Chinese Proverb
